"THIS ISN'T THE TIME TO BE TAKING ANY RISKS"

By Reva Nelson
Some of the largest corporations are expressing the idea that now, of all times, is NOT a good time to take any risks. Downsizing, restructuring, early retirement packages, low morale, and large deficits all point to the time to play it safe. However, if the way we've done business in the past is not being successful in the present, doesn't it mean it's time for a real change in thinking, a shake up of how things have been done?

Yes, we do need to be careful, we do need to be more accountable than ever, but we do also need to take a few chances.

What brings energy into a group, but something new to be excited about? If you want to see morale pick up, get enthusiastic about a new project. Otherwise, all that's going on is picking at whatever slim pieces of meat are left on the old dead bones. Buzzards are picking the carrion and wondering why no one's getting new business. There must always be time to give a new bird a chance to hatch, take flight and soar.

As one of my Fortune 100 clients said about the launch of a new idea and risk, "We're excited again. One of these suckers will fly." We want to be sure the risks we take are well thought out and positive, but take them we must."
